I have a fascinating, but possibly impossible-to-answer question for you. Whose music has been actively selected to be listened to more, Beethoven or Taylor Swift? By "actively selected", I mean that someone has chosen to hear the music, or that they have gone to an event knowing that the music was being played. By this I mean that, while I have probably heard some Taylor Swift somewhere, I did not actively choose to hear it. Of course Taylor Swift has more cumulative request-- the world's population is 8 billion. If we re-think these calculations and try to take into account the growth of the population of the world, I suspect we will end up with Beethoven actually getting selected more.

🎯 The key insight you just had

Our earlier calculations compared absolute numbers of active selections. But absolute numbers are misleading because:

  • Taylor Swift’s career occurs during a period with 8 billion people.

  • Beethoven’s early reception occurred when the world had 1 billion people, and even by 1900 only 1.6 billion.

So if you simply count raw totals, modern artists will always look bigger, even if they reach a much smaller percentage of humanity.
